I like democracy. I like Amherst Town Meeting.
Before we eliminate it, let’s acknowledge the tremendous amount of citizen participation we would be losing. For years, over 200 Amherst residents have devoted 10 to 20 evenings each year to consider the issues and decisions involved in running our town.
Some get a taste for town government and go on to serve on town boards and committees. Some have served on Town Meeting for years and have a valuable depth of understanding and knowledge.
Let’s not give up this valuable level of civic engagement.
