I understand that the police want to keep traffic flowing through downtown Amherst. There are times when the slow crawl is just maddening.
But if they are going to issue citations for double parking and blocking bike lanes, their ticketing should be consistent and not arbitrary. When I head to Bruegger’s in the morning, there is often a semi double parked, blocking both the bike lane and crosswalk by Starbucks. Police drive right by without a nod. When I get to Bruegger’s, there is a semi unloading, parked the full length of the bus stop.
On Cowles Lane, cars are parked facing the traffic direction right under signs saying “No Parking Facing Traffic.” If I have to drive through the back parking lot, there is often a semi parked on the crosswalk by Bueno Y Sano, blocking an entire lane and crossing pedestrians.
I don’t mind the enforcement of traffic and parking regulations. I do get upset by discrimination and unequal enforcement.
