AMHERST

A 45-year-old Hadley man will be summoned to court on charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, failure to stay within marked lanes and speeding after the vehicle he was driving on West Pomeroy Lane near the town line April 1 at 2:38 p.m. hit a speed limit sign and rolled over, police said. The man was trapped in the vehicle and the Amherst Fire Department used extrication tools to free him, police said.

Alexander A. Rivas, 21, of The Brook, was arrested March 28 at 2:53 a.m. on Belchertown Road on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, operating a motor vehicle with a license suspended for driving while intoxicated and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, police said.

A 25-year-old Belchertown man will be summoned to court on a charge of shoplifting over $100 after being determined responsible for taking $374.94 worth of Red Bull and Monster energy drinks in separate incidents Jan. 2 and Jan. 16, police said.

Pelham

Caleb Satterfield, 23, and Justin Satterfield, 25, both of Pelham, were arrested March 10 in Pelham on warrants from the Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown, police said.

Evan Pollard, 22, of Springfield, was arrested March 9 on Amherst Road on two warrants from Springfield District Court, police said.

UMass

Benjamin I. Baptiste, 19, of Natick, was arrested April 1 at 2:11 a.m. on Massachusetts Avenue on charges of possession of a class B drug and larceny under $250, police said.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

4:40 p.m. – A man who walked through the drive-through of a downtown bank and took several photographs of the interior was located a short time later. He told police the pictures are part of an art project he is doing as an Amherst College student.

10:45 p.m. – Police found a man loitering on Gray Street and then walking through back yards of properties. When he was identified, he asking if he was being detained. He fled into woods and was last observed smoking a cigarette inside a nearby home.

DISTURBANCES

7:06 p.m. – Police responded to a South Amherst home where a child was acting out by yelling at his aunt. The boy was calm when police got there.

9:22 a.m. – One driver was issued a citation for failure to use care in stopping following a two-car accident with no personal injuries at the intersection of Amity Street and University Drive, police said.

6:35 p.m. – A road-rage incident on South East Street caused a minor fender-bender accident, police said.

DISTURBANCES

8:18 p.m. – A woman screaming at Colonial Village was found to be inside the residence by herself.

LARCENY

12:17 p.m. – About $95 worth of Red Bull energy drink was reported stolen from Big Y Supermarket on University Drive.

3:16 p.m. – A credit card was stolen and used to make a purchase at a North Amherst package store. Police are investigating.

8:13 p.m. – A vehicle went off Pine Street into a utility pole, police said. A person may have been injured, but no further details were available.

TRAFFIC

2:48 p.m. – A low-hanging cable wire on Shays Street was knocked to the ground by a passing bus.

7:25 p.m. – Cones and a “loose gravel” sign were placed near a large pothole on Bay Road. At 9:53 p.m., another pothole was discovered on East Pleasant Street near Olympia Drive.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

4:19 a.m. – A man who knocked on a Tyler Place door, attempted to get in and then fled was not located by police.

DISTURBANCES

4:55 p.m. – A person reported an incident at the Not Bread Alone soup kitchen in which he was threatened by another man. The man making the threats was upset that he has been asked to not date the other person’s sister.

LARCENY

2:09 p.m. – A man came to the police station to report his Social Security number was used fraudulently in St. Augustine, Florida.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

9:17 p.m. – A loose dog at Village Park scared one person and nipped at the heel’s of his grandmother.

12:27 p.m. – A vehicle went off Henry Street into a utility pole, police said. A person may have been injured in the crash, but no additional details were available from police.

3:47 p.m. – A vehicle parked at the Boltwood parking garage sustained minor damage when struck by a hit-and-run vehicle, police said.

 

THURSDAY, MARCH 30

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

4:10 a.m. – A Main Street woman told police someone was ringing her doorbell and then fleeing. No suspect was found. At 5:45 a.m., the same resident reported someone throwing items at her window. That suspect also was not found.

LARCENY

5:56 p.m. – A child’s bicycle valued at more than $200 was stolen from the porch of a Gray Street home the previous evening.

BREAK-INS

6:44 p.m. – Police are investigating a report of suspicious people around a Sunset Court home. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was reported stolen.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

10:58 p.m. – Police issued a verbal warning to a Strong Street resident playing loud music.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

2:05 p.m. – A woman reported that she was walking on Station Road 90 minutes earlier when a dog came out of a yard and nipped at her heels. Police identified the Australian shepherd’s owner, who was warned to keep the dog on a leash.

1:59 p.m. – One driver was issued a citation for failure to use care in stopping following a two-car accident with no personal injuries at the intersection of College and Dickinson streets, police said.

TRAFFIC

3:30 p.m. – The Department of Public Works was notified about large potholes on East Leverett Road near the Silver Bridge that had damaged passing vehicles. Police placed traffic cones near the potholes to prevent additional vehicles from hitting them.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

10:10 p.m. – People smoking marijuana at Butternut Farm apartments were advised that smoking is prohibited on the site.

DISTURBANCES

10:49 a.m. – A man yelling at post office employees at the North Pleasant Street location and accusing them of stealing $500 from him was removed and issued a trespass notice.

LARCENY

10:51 a.m. – An iPhone and headphones were reported stolen from the boys locker room at the high school. Police are investigating the thefts and may have a suspect.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

2:22 a.m. and 10:12 p.m. – Police issued verbal warnings to Main Street and Mill Hollow Apartments residents playing loud music.

12:43 a.m. – A vehicle parked on North Pleasant Street sustained minor damage when it was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle, police said.

11:01 p.m. – A Honda Accord sustained heavy damage to its undercarriage after going off a sleet-covered Stanley Street and hitting a large rock, police said. The vehicle was towed.

11:28 p.m. – A vehicle went off an icy University Drive into a tree, causing minor damage, according to police.

 

SATURDAY, APRIL 1

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

1:03 p.m. – A mother allegedly being abusive toward a child at a downtown restaurant, by first yelling at him and then dragging him from the restaurant, got onto a bus and was not located.

10:02 p.m. – Police took a report from a guest at the University Lodge who believes someone may have tried to enter his room. Officers found evidence of attempted entry, but it was unclear if anyone got inside.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

12:30 a.m. – A resident and a landlord were referred to civil court following a dispute at an Amherst home over rent payments and possession of mail.

DISTURBANCES

10:30 p.m. – A man causing problems at the Craig’s Place homeless shelter was removed by police and given a courtey escort to downtown Amherst to spend the night.

TRAFFIC

5:33 p.m. – A woman called police after her vehicle was followed by another driver. Police determined that the other driver was trying to get her contact information after a chunk of ice fell from her vehicle and cracked the windshield on his vehicle.

 

SUNDAY, APRIL 2

DISTURBANCES

10:36 p.m. – Drunken people causing a disturbance inside the Newman Center were removed from the building.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

12:03 a.m. – Police issued a verbal warning to Taylor Street residents talking loudly.

12:16 a.m. – Alpine Commons residents holding a loud birthday party were issued a verbal warning by police.

12:30 a.m. – A verbal warning was issued by police to Presidential Apartments residents holding a loud party.

2:24 p.m. – A vehicle horn was sounding on Hallock Street. Police attempted to find the owner.
