The Annual Martin Luther King Community Breakfast is Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. at the Amherst Regional Middle School. The food is followed by a program in the auditorium that includes a Citizen’s Award and student scholarships.

Tickets are available at Hastings and at the door.

The breakfast is one way we celebrate our community and its diversity. We can’t control many of the things that go on in the world but we can be with each other and applaud the people who make our community better.

Susan Morrello of the Recycling Committee sent me an email about the free pellet bag drop- off Jan. 14 at the Transfer Station (formerly known as the dump) on Route 9. The station is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The wood pellet bags must be empty and dry. Staff will be available to assist.

You don’t need a trash sticker to drop off the bags.

Since people will still be heating their homes with more wood pellets, there will be another collection in April, so hold onto the bags.

Elizabeth Fernandez O’Brien sent me an email letter describing her visit to Puerto Rico where she celebrated the holidays.

She connected with the art, music and medical communities where she learned of some resident’s commitment to social justice and that commitment through the arts.

She also noted the “horrible financial outlook” for the island. Despite that there is wonderful energy, she said.

Many thanks to the Amherst Regional High School students who performed and helped backstage with the annual Cabaret. It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon that showcased the talent we have at the school. Fortunately we picked Sunday to attend since the Saturday night show had to be cancelled because of the snow.

Congratulations to ARHS Choral Director Todd Fruth for his first Cabaret.

Now it’s on to the musical, “Anything Goes,” in March.
