AMHERST — A 40-year-old male pedestrian suffered significant injuries after being struck by a freight train near the High Street crossing early Dec. 7, according to Amherst Police.

The man injured in the crash, who was awake and communicating with paramedics following the incident, was taken by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment, said Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson.

The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. and left Main Street closed to through traffic for more than two hours, as the train remained stopped and an investigation began by Amherst Police and officials with New England Central Railroad.

UMass Transit reported PVTA buses on Routes 30 and 45 were bypassing stops near Amherst Town Hall, Gray Street and Churchill Street while Main Street was blocked. Buses resumed making those stops once the train left after 3 p.m.

Police responded to the scene after receiving several 911 calls and are asking anyone with more information about the crash to call 259-3000.

Nelson said the last incident in Amherst involving a train to which an ambulance responded occurred in May 2014, when a car was clipped by a train at the railroad crossing on Bridge Street in the Cushman section of Amherst. No one was injured in that crash.
