New school plan must unify Amherst

Our country is divided and polarized by the recent presidential campaign and election.

Our town is similarly divided and polarized over what we should do about our elementary schools. Let us not become negative, angry and divisive. We are capable of far greater unification and togetherness.

What we have learned in many forums of discussion and debate puts us in a position to quickly and efficiently craft a positive new proposal that can have wide support.

I call on the School Committee to restart a broad inclusionary process that will lead to a plan that unites teachers, parents and citizens. An educational and financial commitment of this magnitude should not be made until there is broad townwide endorsement.
