The Amherst Historical Society is sponsoring its annual House Tour this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are a half-dozen sites with old and new options. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. They are available at Hastings or the Strong House on Amity Street.

I voted early, which meant I could ignore all the pamphlets, brochures, postcards and emails since it was too late to influence me. Several voters I spoke with as a poll worker in Town Hall last week said it was a relief to ignore television ads.

I only hope that candidates will hold off for a year before announcing their intentions to run for president. We all need some respite.

Bonnie Isman of Amherst reminded me about the annual Book Fair sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Library to benefit the library that will be held Nov. 19, from 9 a.m to 3 p.m., in the library. Books, CDs and DVDs for adults and children will be sold. Sorry, no Harlequin romances.

Donations for the sale are still being accepted. Bring them to the library.

Bonnie is the retired director of the library and is on the Friends Board of Directors.

While I wrote a reminder about changing clocks last week, I forgot to mention checking smoke detector batteries. See if the batteries are still good in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
