AMHERST — A vacancy on the Amherst School Committee created by the resignation of Laura Kent will be filled Oct. 13.
Elected to the committee in March, and made the chairwoman of the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee in June, Kent announced her departure Sept. 14 and made it official by submitting a letter to Town Clerk Sandra Burgess on Monday.
As required by state law, the position will be filled by a joint vote of the four remaining School Committee members and the Select Board
Anyone interested in being considered for the position should submit an application to the Select Board office by 4 p.m. Oct. 6.
The person selected through a vote of the two boards will serve until the March 28 town election, and will have an opportunity to take out nomination papers to complete the final two years of the term.
Meanwhile, Burgess announced Tuesday that there are 12 open Town Meeting seats that can be filled in advance of the fall sessions, which begin Nov. 14.
These include six vacancies in Precinct 3, four vacancies in Precinct 4 and one vacancy in both Precinct 7 and 8.
Nomination forms, available at the town clerk’s office, should be completed by 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13.
