AMHERST

Ricky LaPointe, 51, who provided an address as the streets of Northampton, was arrested Aug. 21 at 4:23 p.m. on College Street at Boltwood Avenue on a charge of disorderly conduct after he was found standing in the middle of the road and yelling at passing vehicles, police said.

A 17-year-old Amherst boy will be summoned to court on charges of violating the town’s noise bylaw and being a minor in possession of alcohol after police broke up a party with about 50 guests at a Memorial Drive home Aug. 21 at 12:08 a.m., police said.

A 29-year-old Belchertown resident will be summoned to court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license following a traffic stop on Boltwood Avenue Aug. 20 at 6:37 p.m., police said.

James R. Kentyn, 27, of Graves Street, South Deerfield, was arrested Aug. 18 at 9:34 p.m on Pine Street on charges of disordely conduct and being a minor in possession of alcohol following a traffic stop for speeding, police said.

William F. Sofia III, 20, who provided an address as the streets of Amherst, was arrested Aug. 18 at 4:29 p.m. near the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Kellogg Avenue on charges of disorderly conduct and assault and battery after he punched another person in the face, police said.

Melvin E. Cosme, 20, of Springfield, was arrested Aug. 17 at 8:33 p.m. on East Pleasant Street on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, police said.

A 27-year-old Plainfield woman will be summoned to court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license following a traffic stop on College Street Aug. 17 at 5:19 p.m., police said.

Davis M. Abbott, 23, of Karen Drive, Sunderland, was arrested Aug. 16 at 6:05 p.m. at Puffer’s Pond on charges of disorderly conduct, violating the town’s open container bylaw and inhaling glue or a tox substance, police said.

A 69-year-old Springfield man and a 39-year-old Amherst man will be summoned to court on charges of violating the town’s open container bylaw as a result of the same incident, police said.

Quancey R. Benton, 22, of Springfield, was arrested Aug. 15 at 10:53 p.m. on North Pleasant Street on charges of disorderly conduct after he was found urinating on a church lawn in view of passersby, police said.

Two Springfield residents, ages 25 and 36, will be summoned to court, both on two counts of shoplifting, after they allegedly left the Big Y Supermarket without paying for more than $100 worth of energy drinks April 24, police said.

MONDAY, AUG. 15

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

11:47 a.m. – A man yelling inside a Colonial Village apartment was determined to be in pain because of a bee sting. He told police he would try to keep his expressions of agony down.

5:34 p.m. – Police took a report from a woman who said a friend’s suboxone patches were stolen from her backpack at a downtown location.

 

TUESDAY, AUG. 16

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

11:58 a.m. – Puffton Village residents reported a person knocked on the door daily, but always fled before opening the door. Three days earlier, someone wedged a doughnut between the screen door and the front door of the residence.

6:16 p.m. – A shirtless man walking on East Pleasant Street near downtown, and stumbling possibly due to intoxication, was not located.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

6:25 a.m. – A man who stole money from a tip jar at a downtown coffee shop was identified and issued a trespass notice to stay out of the business.

12:46 p.m.  – Police spoke to a Village Park resident about dealing with ongoing harassment from a man who has been showing up at her residence and sending her text messages.

LARCENY

12:33 a.m. – A license plate was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Fairfield Street.

VANDALISM

9:47 a.m. – A window was smashed on a vehicle parked on College Street overnight.

 

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 17

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

11:50 p.m. – An Amherst resident said a man was loitering in her neighborhood several times and causing her concern. She then saw the same man while shopping in Hadley. Nothing illegal occurred, according to police.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

1:34 p.m. – A loose goat was reported walking in the road near the Amherst Survival Center. More goats were reported loose on Sunderland Road at 3:21 p.m.

MOTOR VEHICLE

ACCIDENTS

1:52 p.m. – A driver distracted when he dropped his wallet was issued a citation following a two-car accident with no personal injuries at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Amity Street, police said.

2:14 p.m. – An Amherst Fire Department ambulance was called to a car crash on Henry Street, but no fuirther details were available.

7:15 p.m. – A vehicle parked at the high school was damaged when it was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle, police said.

TRAFFIC

12:40 a.m. – A tree blocking a lane of traffic on West Street was removed by the Department of Public Works.

 

THURSDAY, AUG. 18

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

6:57 a.m. – A woman told police she was being followed by a man in a vehicle while walking at The Boulders. Police determined the man was a painting contractor arriving to do work at the apartment complex.

7:16 a.m. – Police took a report from an Amherst woman who said her computer was hacked during a power outage a week earlier. She was advised to contact her internet provider.

8:31 p.m. – A person lighting paper on fire outside a Village Park residence told police he was doing so to keep bugs away. He was advised to extinguish the blaze.

DISTURBANCES

1:18 p.m. – A passenger arguing with a PVTA bus driver as the bus traveled on West Street was removed by police.

6:34 p.m. – Police responded to a disturbance at Colonial Village. Officers determined that neighbors were just talking loud.

8:27 p.m. – Youths climbing on the railing and jumping onto the pedestrian walkway between the 103 Shops and the Unitarian Meetinghouse were reported to police. They were advised to be more responsible.

LARCENY

4:11 p.m. – Police are investigating an employee’s theft of $150 worth of merchandise from a South Amherst store.

VANDALISM

4:45 p.m. – A vehicle was scratched with a key at a University Drive parking lot.

ASSAULTS

12:38 p.m. – A homeless man told police he was punched by another homeless man while on a PVTA bus heading to the Amherst Survival Center. The argument began because the assailant is now dating the victim’s former girlfriend. He was offered the right to pursue criminal charges but refused. At 8:18 p.m., the assailant in the previous call was downtown loitering and involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend  over where they could pitch their tent. He was calmed down. At 9:48 p.m., the woman was discovered sleeping inside a downtown building and will be issued a trespass notice. At 10:09 p.m., she was consuming alcohol at a nearby location and was warned again about her actions.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

3:41 p.m. – Police assisted High Street residents in removing a bat flying inside their home.

MOTOR VEHICLE

ACCIDENTS

12:28 p.m. – A motorcycle and motor vehicle collided at the intersection of Triangle and East Pleasant streets, police said. No injuries were reported, according to police.

2:35 p.m.  – One vehicle was towed following a two-car accident with no personal injuries on Belchertown Road, police said.

TRAFFIC

8:47 a.m. – Market Hill Road was closed to traffic after a tree fell across it. The Department of Pubic Works was contacted to remove the tree.

 

FRIDAY, AUG. 19

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

2:13 a.m. – A man loitering at Immanuel Lutheran Church playing the smartphone game Pokemon Go checked out OK, but was advised to leave the area due to the late hour.

5:57 a.m. – A man sleeping in the lobby at Clark House was awoken and issued a trespass notice to stay out of the building.

11:53 a.m. – A woman walking on South East Street told police a passing motorcyclist tried to grab her. Police were unable to locate him.

7:03 p.m. – Police found a man hanging out with youths in the West Cemetery. He told police he is their mentor, and was then sent on his way.

DISTURBANCES

4:34 p.m. – Police kept the peace between two women arguing over unleashed dogs at Wentworth Conservation Area. One woman allegedly made threats by waving a stick at the other.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

12:18 p.m. – Police determined that loud noise coming from an apartment at Colonial Village was a toddler running around.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

12:49 a.m.- Police woke up a Country Corners Road resident to get a dog wandering in the yard back inside the home.

TRAFFIC

6:09 p.m. – A portable closet that fell from a vehicle onto Belchertown Road was removed by police.

 

SATURDAY, AUG. 20

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

1:30 p.m. – A man at a downtown store who made threats about confronting store security after he told them he felt he was being followed fled before police got there.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

7 a.m. and 7:06 a.m. – Management at two College Street business were warned that overnight watering of lawns is prohibited during the current water ban.

DISTURBANCES

1:06 a.m. – A person who smashed a glass candle on the North Pleasant Street sidewalk in downtown Amherst was advised to clean up the debris.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

8 p.m. – A live band performing outside Amherst Motel for a 48th anniversary party ended its set when police got there. Hadley Police received complaints that nearby buildings in its town were shaking from the volume of the music. Guests at the party began to leave after officers arrived.

11:41 p.m. – Police issued a verbal warning to loud people on the porch of a Cowls Road home.

 

SUNDAY, AUG. 21

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

2:12 a.m. – Police located an underage female who was holding alcohol and walking with a 16-year-old girl on East Pleasant Street. Officers spoke to the younger girl’s mother, who said it was fine that her daughter was walking downtown Amherst streets at that time. A friend of the family arrived to pick up the two females and bring them home, while the alcohol was confiscated for destruction.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

8:17 p.m. – Police took calls from people concerned about books and other materials spilling out of the book-return container in front of the Jones Library.

DISTURBANCES

6:42 p.m. and 8:16 p.m.– Disturbances at the corner of North Pleasant Street and Kellogg Avenue and outside the First Congregational Church on Main Street ended when police got there.

FIGHTS

1:13 a.m. – Six people fighting inside Antonio’s ended their altercation when police got there.

MOTOR VEHICLE

ACCIDENTS

1:24 p.m. – Police were unable to locate a vehicle that struck another vehicle at the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Sunderland Road and then fled.

TRAFFIC

8:35 a.m. – A motor home with a dislodged propane tank got stuck on the raised crosswalks on College Street, prompting police to close both lanes of the road until 9:54 a.m. Representatives from a propane company retrieved the tank. 

9:22 a.m. – Police were unable to locate a man observed licking the traffic lines painted on Main Street.

9:14 p.m. – Police issued a ticket to a vehicle parked on the Kellogg Avenue sidewalk.
