Garden report: they are smaller than golf balls but bigger that peas — my green tomatoes. They are on their way to scrumptiousness. All the vegetables and flowers need water and the weather report is perfect for beach goers — warm and sunny — but not perfect for gardeners.

Brian Melley, the son of Ellen and Dan Melley of Amherst had his byline on a story in the Springfield Republican last week. He was writing about fires in Los Angeles for the Associated Press. He graduated from Amherst Regional High School and was an Orchard Valley neighbor.

Anton Melchionda, the son of Michele Melchionda of Amherst, was heard on NPR last week talking about a development project in Pittsfield that his company is considering.
He was in a Cub Scout group that I co-led. He also graduated from ARHS.

Scott Koh, the son of Byron Koh and Charlene Koh both of Amherst, was in town and his father brought him to our cribbage group.
Scott starred in high school musicals and was a classmate of my son, who also was involved in the Theater Company.
It still surprises me how the children I watched grow up become adults with families of their own while I haven’t gotten any older.

The Fourth of July is next week. The annual South Amherst parade around Fiddler’s Green begins at 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed to register parade marchers, cut watermelon and serve lemonade and ice cream. Call Jeanne Esposito or visit the Munson Memorial Library for details how to help.
Later in the day, continue the fun with the annual LSSE events that are held outside the University of Massachusetts stadium.
Games and food and a concert by the Amherst Community Band are part of the festivities capped by fireworks.
The event is free, but it does cost money to put in on. If you are able to make a donation, it would be much appreciated.
