“The Horse Show,” an exhibit of paintings by Bella Halsted, will open with a reception Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and will remain on view through June 25 at the Barnes Gallery, Leverett Crafts and Arts, 13 Montague Road, Leverett.

The paintings were done over the past three years, after a trip by the artist to Venice, where she was inspired by the great bronze horses of San Marco, which look out over the cathedral square.

Music at Porter-Phelps

“Wednesday Folk Traditions,” an outdoor concert series, will feature performances June 15 by Youssoupha Sidibe and Charles Neville Wednesday in the Sunken Garden at the Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum, 130 River Drive in Hadley.

On the program: jazz, reggae, and blues blended with musical styles from New Orleans and West Africa.

Sidibe is a Grammy-nominated Senegalese master kora player. He features a mix of western music, reggae and West African harp. His musical career began 25 years ago in Senegal, where he trained as a kora player at the National Music Conservatory of Senegal. The kora is a traditional African instrument fashioned from a large gourd cut in half and covered with cow skin for resonance.

Neville, a Grammy-winning saxophone virtuoso, has been influenced in his music by his time living in New Orleans, New York City, Memphis and Oregon. His repertoire includes rhythm and blues, funk, jazz, be-bop and popular music. He’s been playing professionally since the age of 15, often collaborating with his brothers, Aaron, Art and Cyril.

The concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Picnickers are welcome on the museum grounds beginning at 5 p.m.

Admission costs $12; $2 for children 16 and under.

Express yourself

An exhibit of artwork by abstract expressionist painter Lorna Ritz of Amherst (and friends) will be on view June 15 through July 31 at the Diana Felber Gallery, 6 Harris St. in West Stockbridge.

“My ideas come from my imagination in a completely improvisational, passionate way,” Ritz writes in an artist’s statement. “I love to see open, breathing, moving space create entryways deep into the picture plane on the flat surface of linen.”

Ritz received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Pratt Institute, and a master’s degree in fine arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art, both in painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze). She taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, the University of Minnesota and Dartmouth College, and was a “guest critic” at the Vermont Studio Center from 1991 to 2013. She has taught painting, drawing and art history at Western New England University since 2004.

The gallery is open every day except Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, visit dianafelbergallery.com.
