AMHERST — Vacant land on either side of Atkins Farms Country Market has long been eyed for its development potential to create a village center, where housing, along with shops and restaurants, would serve Applewood Apartments and Upper Orchard residents, as well as students, faculty and staff at Hampshire College.

Garden report: the delphinium and celosia have bloomed. One tomato is larger than a golf ball but smaller than a baseball and there are several other green ones including a cluster of Sun Gold tomatoes. We are getting closer to harvest.
Garden report: the day lilies, calendula and coreopsis have bloomed. I planted broccoli and egg plant starts that were leftover at Sunset Farm. I have little success with those two plants. However, hope is a major component of gardening.

AMHERST — A youth empowerment initiative for Amherst students attending the Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools, in which they will also learn entrepreneurial skills, will take place for two weeks in July.
Garden report: the snap dragon and astilbe have bloomed. Several -larger than a pea but smaller than a golf ball - tomatoes are visible. The basil needs warm weather. It has not grown much. The thyme and mint are thriving.

AMHERST — Outdoor swim season is underway in Amherst, with the full-size pool at Mill River Recreation Area opening in early June and both War Memorial Pool and the wading pool at Mill River scheduled to be ready for swimmers this week.
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15. Thank you to all the men who look after others.
Garden report: the peonies have bloomed. Several volunteer morning glories are up.

AMHERST — A presentation of the Human Rights Commission’s Youth Hero Awards and a picnic will highlight Race Amity Day: A Celebration of the Oneness of the Human Family, taking place Sunday at Mill River Recreation Area, 95 Montague Road.
Garden report — I am at least 10 days behind in planting delayed by the cold and wet weather. However, the tomatoes and peppers are finally in. I planted asters, dahlia, snap dragons, celosia and phlox. There are still two flower areas to do. Some seedlings in front of my sliding glass door still need to get bigger.
Reminder Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day. Town offices, libraries, schools and banks will be closed. We remember those who sacrificed for us.

AMHERST — CRESS Connections, a new program of the Community Responders for Equity, Safety and Service, is bringing together the unarmed public safety professionals with local youths to build more meaningful relationships.
Garden Report: flora and fauna — the iris have bloomed, there are buds on the peonies, the snake has returned and now there are two bunnies who come to eat the grass. The cucumbers, basil and potatoes have been planted. I have been harvesting lettuce leaves.
Garden report: the lilacs have bloomed.

AMHERST — Amherst Recreation Department’s work at expanding accessibility and empowering youth is being recognized through an award presented by the Massachusetts Recreation and Park Association.
Garden report: the pulminaria has bloomed as has the dandelions. I planted radish seeds in a raised bed. The bugs are back, saw a mosquito and wasp and other flying winged creatures.

Our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves greatly impact how we feel and act in our close relationships. Humans are the only species that engage in “self-talk.” Many of us find ourselves having both positive thoughts about ourselves (for example, “I feel proud for what I just accomplished”) and other times negative and self-defeating thoughts (such as, “I am not attractive enough”). In my work with couples, it is often the derogatory self-talk that each individual engages in that contributes to the difficult and painful dynamics between partners.

AMHERST — Several Amherst Regional High School students recently had the opportunity to travel to the State House to offer testimony to the Joint Committee on Ways and Means hearing, explaining to legislators why funding formulas for state aid to local school districts should be revised.
