Barbara Schuman of Amherst sent me a postcard, a painting of the Philadelphia skyline. She wrote that a 37-foot statue of William Penn sits on top of City Hall. It was understood for decades that no building could be taller than his hat. That ended in 1985 when approval was given to build two skyscrapers, Liberty one and Liberty two. The painting shows the statue surrounded by buildings higher than his hat.
Doug and Joanne Keller of Hadley sent me a postcard of the Bad Axe movie theater in Bad Axe, Michigan. They visited family in the thumb of Michigan and were on their way to British Columbia.

A reception will be held Sept. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. She wrote that she was born in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty that welcomed her ancestors to the land of liberty. The figure has been a central theme to her work for more than 40 years, she wrote.
