Garden report: The coreopsis, day lilies, morning glory and snapdragon have bloomed. The sugar snap peas have blossoms. It’s just a matter of days before they can be harvested. The rains came at a great time, everything was so dry and watering takes quite a bit of time.

Note the date: Amherst fireworks are Tuesday, July 2. Repeat Tuesday, July 2 — NOT Thursday, July 4. The fireworks and concert will be held at the UMass stadium field as usual.

The South Amherst Fourth of July parade will be held on the Fourth of July with marchers circling Fiddler’s Green, the name of the South Amherst Common. The South Amherst Congregational Church is planning some special activities to celebrate their 200th anniversary.

Bruce Penniman of Amherst sent me an email about another South Church anniversary event, “Reading Frederick Douglass Together,” that will be held Friday, July 5 at 3 p.m. on the South Common. The Amherst Area Gospel Choir will perform. It’s free and open to the public.

Last year over 300 people came, so it might be a good idea to bring your own chair.
