Winter is coming. The white-coated lawns and shrubs last week are a harbinger of things to come. The temperature numbers this weekend will be really low. Time to find the gloves and scarves. If you open your car with a key, don’t forget the lock deicer. Many cars now use fobs so it is not as big an issue as before.

The annual St. Nicholas Bazaar will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grace Church on the Town Common. The event includes antiques, collectibles, toys, baked goods, lunch, books, wreaths and white elephant. It’s free.

Susan Mulholland of Leverett sent me a email about the Mudpie Potters Holiday Exhibit, Sale and Open Studios Saturday, Dec. 7 and 14 at Leverett Arts and Crafts. LCA is at 13 Montague Raod in Leverett.

Good news: The Amherst Farmers Market begins a winter season Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the large activity room at the Bangs Center. It will be held every Saturday in December then every other week after that. There are no weather issues with an indoor market.

Orchard Valley neighbor Adrienne Terrizzi sent me a email about the fifth annual Orchard Valley Community get-together Sunday, Dec. 8 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the path leading to Markert’s Pond on Pondview Drive. There is a modest tree that gets decorated with a range of donations. It’s free. There are refreshments. I may have some cookies made by that time.

Julian Hynes of Amherst sent an email about the Amherst Shade Tree Committee work day on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 9 a.m. at Cherry Hill Cohousing on Pulpit Hill Road in town.

Fanny Rothschild of Amherst sent me an email about the Amherst Media Raise Your Voice Gala that will be held Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m.at the UMass Student Union Ballroom.

Jacquie Wallace and the Amherst Area Gospel Choir, which she directs, will receive the Jean Haggerty Award for community service. For tickets, call 259-3300.
