Garden report: I made another batch of spaghetti sauce and it was on a cool day. I will make eggplant Parmesan with my eggplant and my sauce. If I had a cow, I could also make my own cheese for the casserole.

I have given up on the red cabbage. After weeks it only has a few leaves and no prospect of a head. It is in the compost pile. The celery is ready. I have good size bright green stalks and the aroma is dense.

The annual Community Fair sponsored by the Amherst Rotary Club will begin Friday, Aug. 23 at 5:30 p.m. on the Town Common. It continues Saturday from 1 to10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. The usual fair rides and food will be available.

The fair is a fundraiser that supports high school scholarships and charity donations that the club distributes annually.

The Strings on Strong concert series begins with the Amethyst Quartet on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Strong House Museum. It’s free. Bring a blanket or chairs. If it rains, it will be rescheduled.

The 57th annual Community Breakfast that kicks off the academic year will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 a.m. at the UMass Student Union Ballroom.It is co-sponsored by the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce. The Amherst public schools will open before Labor Day. Be on the lookout for the yellow buses. Remember: Don’t pass the bus when the lights are flashing.
