Garden report: The chipmunk is having a superb meals with my tomatoes — even green ones. I try to harvest every day to keep ahead of the little foodie, but the chipmunk is faster and can squeeze through the fence.

The asters and hibiscus have bloomed. Waiting for the New England asters, which should come in shortly.

I do have very large brown toadstools sprinkled in the lawn.

What a difference a day makes. The Strings on Strong concert at the Amherst Historical Society Museum on Aug. 10 was canceled because of the potential rain from the end of the hurricane. Saturday was absolutely beautiful, not a drop of rain. It would have been a perfect day for an outdoor concert.

The concert will be heard in September instead.

A Community Safety Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 17 from to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mill River Recreation Area. The event includes 10 groups, from the Amherst Senior Center to police departments from the town, UMass and Amherst College. Demonstrations, presentations, music, food and face-painting are some of the activities. It’s free.

The Friends of the Amherst Senior Center will hold a Pop-up Closet Fundraiser Sept. 21 at the Amherst Farmers Market.
