Garden Report: flora and fauna — the iris have bloomed, there are buds on the peonies, the snake has returned and now there are two bunnies who come to eat the grass. The cucumbers, basil and potatoes have been planted. I have been harvesting lettuce leaves.

Garden report: the lilacs have bloomed.

Garden report: the forget-me-nots have bloomed. The Solomon seal is many inches high. Radish and snow pea seeds have sprouted.

Garden report: the pulminaria has bloomed as has the dandelions. I planted radish seeds in a raised bed. The bugs are back, saw a mosquito and wasp and other flying winged creatures.

Garden report: Tulip and daylily shoots are up in my backyard. I have seen crocus in bloom in neighbor’s yards and buildings around town.

Garden report: It is now officially spring and the ground seems to know this. I saw snowdrops in bloom at the Munson Memorial Library. Daffodil shoots and tulip shoots have broken through the soil in the bed right next to the south side of my house.

Indoor garden report: There are still two good blossoms on one amaryllis plant. The other plant has a new shoot coming up that has a bud. Something beautiful to look forward to against the snow.

Sort of garden report: A friend told me forsythia can now be cut and forced indoors. Having bright yellow flowers in the house would be lovely this time of year.

Amaryllis follow-up. With one plant having two stalks with four blossoms each, it is top-heavy and falls over. I put the plant in a deep vase to protect it.

State Rep. Mindy Domb sent me an email about the food drive she is hosting to benefit the Amherst Survival Center. The Light and Love Community Food Drive is inspired by the Rev. Martin Luther King’s words, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” she wrote.
