Reminder Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day. Town offices, libraries, schools and banks will be closed. We remember those who sacrificed for us.

Hadley celebrates Memorial Day with a parade Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m. The route begins at the American Legion, travels west on Route 9 then right onto West Street.

Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. at the Legion Hall. The public is invited. It’s free.

Amherst’s Memorial Day Celebration will be held Monday, May 26. Residents will walk from Spring Street and Boltwood Avenue up North Pleasant Street to the War Memorial pool at 9 a.m. The ceremony takes place at the War Memorial pool at 10 a.m. It’s free. The public is invited.

Garden report: the columbine, rhododendron, iris, crane bill geranium and Jacob’s ladder have bloomed.

Gabriel Dávila Bustamante, son of Dr. Jaime Dávila and Ms. Isolda Ortega-Bustamante of Amherst, graduated from Cornell University, where he majored in Industrial and Labor Relations, according to an email from his mother. He played Club Water Polo for three years and went to nationals his first year. He was a co-founder and Vice-President of the Cornell Ethics Bowl Club and President and Vice-President of Acacia International Fraternity, the only international fraternity on campus.

Fort River will unveil the two metal time capsules buried in 1993 to celebrate the school’s 20th anniversary Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m., according to an email from Jayne Pearl, who served as co-chair of the anniversary committee along with Jeanne Horrigan.

It will be interesting to see what will be buried when the new school opens next year. Perhaps the original items could be included as well.

The public is invited to the opening.

A reception to honor retiring Town Clerk Sue Audette will be held Wednesday, June 4 at 3 p.m. in Town Hall. The public is invited.

The annual chicken salad, strawberry shortcake supper, sponsored by South Church on the South Amherst Common, will be dine-in as well as takeout Saturday, June 7. To-go pickup is between 5-6 p.m., while dine-in will be served at 5 p.m. There is a vegetarian option.

Tickets are $18. Call 253-2977 for reservations.

This event is the unofficial beginning of summer.
