The Amherst Garden Club Annual Plant Sale is Saturday, May 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, on the Town Common, according to an email from Theresa Smith of Pelham. The sale includes perennials, annuals, and shrubs from the gardens of club members.

Dick Matteson is retiring after 17 years as the music director of the First Congregational Church. A concert to celebrate his 65 years as a church musician will be held Saturday, May 17 at 2 p.m, at the church. The program includes a chorus of singers form the area. If you want to join the chorus, contact the church. A reception will follow. Donations to support the program will be welcome.

The Amherst Regional High School Sene Gambian Scholars Program offers West African meals for take out Saturday, May 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. in partnership with the South Congregational Church, according to an email from Bruce Penniman of Amherst.
A peanut stew and a chicken dish are available. Cost is $16. The deadline to order is May 12.

Mary Carey and Brian Schultz of Amherst sent me a postcard from Yellowknife, Canada, the biggest and only city in the Northwest Territories.
“It was the location for the tv show ‘Ice Road Truckers’ and the best place in the world to see the Northern lights,” they wrote. The lights were fabulous, they wrote. They also went dogsledding.

Mona Wu, Samuel, David and Issac Orr of Amherst sent me three postcards from Neipu and Taipei, Taiwan. The postcards are based on the art of a shop owner. One was absolutely amazing. One half was paper, the other hall featured a transparent insert on which a scene was painted.
They visited family, saw beautiful orchards, went to the beach. It was 86 degrees and humid but the sea breeze made it bearable, Mona wrote.
