On the biggest stage in high school outdoor track and field, athletes from Amherst Regional solidified their spot among the best in the country at this past weekend’s Nike Nationals meet at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

A dozen Hurricanes athletes participated in events from Thursday through Sunday and totaled eight top-10 finishes, including two event wins and one runner-up finish. The Amherst girls also set four school records in separate relays throughout the four-day competition, with another record in a mixed relay.

“I had high hopes, but I was surprised that pretty much every single time we raced, they ran better than the time before,” Hurricanes girls head coach Chris Gould said.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes wrapped up competition in three relay events. The boys’ 4x400-meter relay squad of Owen Platt, Miles Jeffries, Nico Lisle and Tylahn Beckett grabbed second place in the Emerging Elite Division. The quartet crossed the line in 3 minutes, 25 seconds to take the runner-up spot, trailing first place Eastwood, Ohio by about one second.

“Frankly, they outperformed what I thought they would be able to do,” Gould said on the boys relays. “Their sprint medley was fabulous, it was just great, they competed really well against the teams there. The mixed 4x400 was highly competitive too.”

The 4x400 was the boys’ best relay event as Amherst snagged third in the sprint medley and fifth in the mixed relay.

The Amherst girls also ran in two relays on the final day of events, taking sixth in the 4x100 and fourth in the 4x400. Ololara Baptiste, Moriah Luetjen, Ruby Austin and Claire Fortin concluded in 48.08 seconds (school record) in the 4x100, while that same group — save for Skylar Fox swapping in for Fortin — finished the 4x400 in 3:49.91 (school record). Both races were in the Championship Division of events, the fastest division in the meet.

Sunday’s race capped off an incredible season for the girls’ 4x400, in particular. The top-five finish nationally is a cherry on top for the ‘Canes, who also earned a New England title, a Massachusetts state title and a Western Mass. title all in the span of about a month.

“I’m shocked, actually,” Gould said. “It’s a very rare thing to run every single time at a slightly higher level and just keep running faster and faster. Honestly [3:49] was kind of out of the realm of possibility, in my opinion, but they did it. I think they were half a second off the all-time Mass. state record.”

Saturday’s results featured an event win in the wheelchair shot put, as Angel Hernandez took first place with a toss of 8 feet, 10 inches, while Luetjen earned 26th place in the girls 400. Luetjen’s time came in at 57.01 seconds in the Championship Division race.

Earlier in the weekend, the Amherst girls sprint medley relay (4:05.59), the 4x200 relay (1:43.11) and the mixed 4x400 relay (3:39.60) teams set three separate school records, to go along with Sunday’s new top mark in the 4x100 on the girls side.

Logan Alfandari won the shot put event in the Emerging Elite division and placed 20th in the discus as well, rounding out Amherst’s slew of impressive performances out in the West Coast.

“I didn’t take anything for granted,” Gould said regarding the consistent success of the team throughout the entire season. “I knew that we had something remarkable going on. I think we’re going to be good again next year, actually. We lose some big guns for sure, but I think we’re going to be really competitive again. It was just very nice to have a team that wanted to keep competing, week after week after week. That is not always how things go.”
