Garden report: the leaves are turning; it really is fall. While I was cleaning out the vegetable beds, I found a cucumber under the weeds. Great surprise.

Reminder: Monday, Oct. 12 is a holiday. Banks, town offices, libraries and post offices will all be closed. However, you have all day to go to supermarkets and malls to get your Halloween candy and see if the Christmas stuff is out.

The 50th Anniversary of the Amherst Survival Center will be held Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the UMass Student Union Ballroom. For tickets visit: amherstsurvival.org. It all started with Jane Holappa and a card table.

Jeanne Horrigan, head of the Council on Aging, sent me an email about the Aging in Place program that will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Munson Memorial Library. Vendors will provide information about programs and services that allow residents to stay in their homes longer. The event is free.

The 54th Annual Fall Foliage and 5K Cider Run/Walk will be held Sat., Oct. 17 beginning at 10 a.m. on the Town Common. The event is a benefit for the ABC ( A Better Chance ) program that provides student scholars an opportunity for a better education.

The South Amherst Congregational Church continues its dinner program with a roast pork/vegetarian sausage meal Sat. Oct 17. Dine-in is at 5 p.m., while take-out is between 5-6 p.m. For reservations, call 253-2977. A portion of the proceeds is donated to local charities.

Kathleen Callahan of South Deerfield and former Orchard Valley neighbor sent a blank postcard of Iceland to me via the Gazette. She wrote a note saying she bought a postcard and stamp, but she forgot to write it out and mail it. She visited last month and wrote that Iceland was amazing. “I like best the waterfalls, geysers, hot springs (Blue Lagoon) and the puffins.”
