Reminder: Monday, Sept.7 is Labor Day. Town offices, schools, libraries and banks will be closed Monday. Supermarkets and malls will be open. It’s a good time to get together with friends and neighbors before the academic year starts and schedules get full.

Garden report: I made three quarts of tomato sauce, two loaves of zucchini bread and refrigerated pickles this weekend. I found more potatoes. The sugar snap peas have germinated. I have netting on the seedlings to keep the rabbits and birds away.

Community Feedback Sessions to envision the new Jones Library will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at noon at the Munson Memorial Library. The series continues Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Jones Library on University Drive and Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Bangs Center. Childcare and refreshments will be provided. Dennis Bromery of Amherst sent me some good news. His nephew Justin Thompson will have a public reception for his current exhibition at UMass in the Augusta Savage Gallery at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10. The exhibit runs Sept. 4-25. Justin is the grandson of the late Randolph Bromery, who was the UMass Chancellor and the Fine Arts Center is now named the Bromery Arts Center. Dana Carnegie of Amherst went to Japan to chaperone 21 Girl Scouts. She emailed a photo of the group in front of the Great Buddha of Kamakula, that dates to the 13th century. She said some of the scouts were seasoned travelers and one had never flown.

Good news — it didn’t rain during the Community Fair sponsored by the Amherst Rotary Club last weekend. Several of us, longtime residents, were commenting that it always rains at some time during the fair. I recall it had to be cancelled one year because the common became a mudslide.

The academic year has begun. Please be patient with motorists who are new to town and not familiar with our roads. Traffic is heavier and watch for school busses.
