Garden report: the coreopsis, Canterbury bells and daisies have bloomed.

Anita Sarro of Amherst sent me an email noting that her husband, Randy Purington, will be in the tenor section singing at the Berkshire Choral International concert Saturday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tillis Performance Center, UMass. Tickets are $20 and available at the door. The theme is British Mavericks.

Amherst’s Pride Celebration is Sunday, June 28 from noon until 3 p.m. The parade begins at Amherst Regional High School at noon and ends at the Common at 1 p.m. At the Common there will be a resource fair, vendors and performances. It’s free and open to the public.

The Amherst Fireworks to mark the country’s 250th birthday will be held Friday, July 3 at 5:30 p.m. next to the UMass stadium. The event includes games, food and a concert by the Amherst Community Band and other musical groups. Some of the games and hot air balloon rides have a fee, otherwise It’s free and open to the public. Bring blankets or chairs.

The annual South Amherst Parade will be held Saturday, July 4 marching around the South Amherst Common. The South Amherst Thursday Club, of which I am member, leads the parade with our banner. Decorated bikes, trikes,  costumed characters are all welcome to march, as well as musicians. Register at 9: 15  a.m. Watermelon and ice cream will be served. The event includes a variety games. The parade is free and open to the public, not just South Amherst residents. If you had a non-digital camera, it would be a Kodak moment.

Kathy Callahan of South Deerfield sent a postcard of Niagara Falls. She was on a bus tour and said the Canadian side is much better. The group had dinner in the revolving Skyton Restaurant followed by fireworks, she wrote. Kathy’s parents, Billie and Jim Callahan were Orchard Valley neighbors.

The Amherst Area League of Women Voters, of which I am a member, is getting ready for the annual book sale. Books, no texts, in good condition will be collected July 2-12 ( not on the 4th) at 41 Russell St. in Hadley right next to the Hampton Inn. The Fort River School was no longer available since it will come down. Please do not donate moldy or damaged books. CDs, DVDs and puzzles are also being collected. Thanks for reading.
