Garden report: The Solomon Seal has bloomed. Some daffodils are still in bloom. I am waiting for the iris to open up. This week should see the end of low overnight temperatures. I will start planting this weekend.

A three-mile Walking Rivers tour will be held Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to noon sponsored by the Fort River Watershed Association. Meet at the Atkins Reservoir, 42 Cushman Road, North Amherst. Wear a blue shirt and good shoes. It’s free and open to the public.

Immigration to Northampton: A Walking Tour, sponsored by Historic Northampton , will be held Thursday, May 21 at 10 a.m. Elizabeth Sackton will lead the tour. Registration is required and there is sliding scale admission. For details visit: historicnorthampton.org.

The Garden Club of Amherst will hold its annual plant sale Saturday, May 23, rain or shine from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Town Common, according to an email from Jaana Custon. The sale includes perennials, shrubs and small trees donated by local gardeners. She said the sale funds town beautification projects, a  scholarship and donations to local organizations.

Graduations will be held this weekend and next so plan your errands to avoid the traffic.
Motorists who are familiar with the area know how to avoid Route 9 construction in Hadley. Except some have no choice and have to use the road. Several friends shared stories of extreme backups, lights not working, no traffic control etc. Picture this: graduation traffic and Route 9 construction.
