SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Frontier baseball team took home a 17-7 victory over Smith Voc in six innings on Wednesday night.

The Redhawks were led by a solid two-way day from senior captain Carter Miller, who was especially efficient on the mound. Through his two-inning start, Miller threw just 23 pitches, allowing just one hit and zero runs in the process.

Miller added a pair of hits at the plate, with two RBIs and a stolen base.

“[Miller’s] been doing great on the bump for us so far,” Frontier head coach Chris Williams said. “It was huge that [he] was able to throw those first two innings under 25 pitches. Now he’s ready for [Thursday].”

Austin D’Urso was the only other Redhawk to finish the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 at the dish with a double and an RBI.

Frontier found success taking what the Vikings were giving it, earning seven free passes along with three hit-by-pitches. Errors in the field also plagued Smith Voc., tallying eight in the loss.

Once the Redhawks reached base, they kept the pressure on, swiping eight bags across the six-inning contest. Despite just nine total hits as a team, Frontier mustered up 17 runs, winning without much success barreling up the ball.

“I’m certainly not satisfied with the level we’re hitting at,” Williams said. “And I think when it comes time for some big league games and getting into postseason, you can’t just rely on athletic base running.”

The Vikings struggled to find offense early on, with the bats coming alive in the later innings. Despite all seven of the team’s runs coming during a hot stretch between the fifth and sixth innings, the deficit was too large to surmount.

Jacoby Dunn led Smith Voc with two hits in his three at-bats on Tuesday, with
Owen Belden going 1-for-1 with an RBI double, two walks and two runs scored in the loss.

The loss for the Vikings is their first of the young season, putting their record at 1-1 on the year to this point. They’ll be back in action on Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m., taking on St. Mary’s on the road.

Frontier’s win improves its record to 3-2 on the season, returning home to host Turners Falls on Thursday, April 9, at 4 p.m.

“We’re pumped we got a home win,” Williams said. “We’re pumped we were able to rally and score runs when we needed to. But then also, we’ve got to start barreling up the baseball more consistently, one through nine.”
