Garden report: the autumn sedum and the New England asters have started to bloom. The morning glories continue to climb and bloom.

Bruce Penniman of Amherst sent an email about the Arts and Social Justice Series program that will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the South Congregational Church. Tom Weiner and Amilcar Shabazz’s will discuss their new book “In Defiance: 20 Abolitionists You Were Never Taught in School.”  Participants are encouraged to register at penniman@umass.edu for more information. Copies of the book are available at Amherst Books at a discounted price thanks to a grant from Mass Humanities, he wrote.

Michelle Friedman of Hadley handed me a flier at the Farmer’s Market about the Friends of Lake Warner Full Moon Fundraising Paddle that will be held Saturday, Sept.6 from 7-9 p.m. Meet at the Lake Warner boat ramp.

The Amherst History Center will host an opening reception for its inaugural exhibition “Amherst Then & Now: A Pictorial Retrospective of 125 Years of Memory Keeping,”  Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the satellite space, 45 Boltwood Walk. A brief gallery talk starts at 6 p.m., according to an email from Liz Larson, History Center director.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Amherst Historical Society’s History Bites series begins Sept. 12 at noon at the Bangs Center. Christie Higginbottom will speak on “Native Plants in the Early Nineteenth Century Garden.” It’s free. Bring your lunch.

Joan Kurtz, president of the Friends of Easthampton Dog Park, sent me an email about the spaghetti dinner fundraiser Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Easthampton for the Friends of Easthampton Dog Park. The money will be used to build a dog park in  Nonotuck Park. Tickets are $12.  visit:  easthamptondogpark@gmail for information.

A very kind column reader gave me a package of Reese’s peanut butter cups after I wrote that I would prefer that candy to a $17 chocolate bar. I would share but I ate it very happily. Thank you my friend.
