Phyllis LEHRERTHE LEHRER REPORT

Garden report: I harvested my potatoes. They are not large, smaller than a baseball  but bigger than a golf ball. Volunteer morning glories are climbing and blooming  on the dead hosta stakes. With the cooler weather I can do some weeding but first I have to find the flowers.

The Amherst Public Schools and the town will sponsor a First Day Celebration, Monday, Aug. 25 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Kendrick Park. The event includes fire trucks and school buses, tables staffed by local community groups, the superintendent and principals, and free ice cream. The last will get me there. The sensory friendly part of the evening is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

It’s free and open to the public.

What is interesting is if you go to the School Department website, there is no date listed for the first day of school. The best clue is seeing a school bus in your neighborhood.

Lillian Gordon of Amherst told me her mother, Nellie, died last week. “As we never did anything for my father, (Glen) our plan is to have a celebration of life for both my mom and dad.  This will take place at UMASS on November 22,” she wrote.

Details will be provided as we get closer to the date.

I saw Nellie every week at the Tai Chi class at the Bangs Center. She knew all the moves and was good at it.  Condolences to the family.
