Why I’m voting for Darcy DuMont

Darcy DuMont is forward looking. She will shape policy with the creativity of a former art teacher, the attention to details of a former lawyer, and the tenacity of a climate activist.

Two years ago, I worked hard for passage of the school building override. I was angry at the time that Town Meeting didn’t authorize the appropriation. But I wasn’t mad at my friends who privately voted against it. I understood their reasons for their personal vote.

Now I’m working hard to get Darcy DuMont elected with a team of rivals who agree on Darcy but took different sides on the school project and the Town Charter. One of the reasons I admire Darcy so much is that she has the ability to pull people together across divisions and move us forward.

We need to build bridges to move forward. A group called Amherst Forward (AF) seems to be using past issues that divided Amherst to drum up opposition to popular, independent candidates like Darcy. It didn’t work in the preliminary election. Darcy virtually tied with AF’s top vote getter in District 5, and she beat the next AF candidate by almost 300 votes.

I’m supporting candidates for Amherst Town Council who are truly forward looking, who will bring their own fresh ideas and amplify the voices of their constituents. Darcy DuMont is already doing that, raising high priority issues about our schools, downtown development, and clean energy.
