In anticipation of Amherst's 250th anniversary in 2009, 10,000 daffodil bulbs are being planted on town commons and in municipal parks this fall as part of an effort called "Amherst in Bloom."
The bulbs are expected to be put in the ground in October by local landscapers and students at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. The daffodil varieties Goblet, Camelot and Thalia are recommended for planting by the Garden Club of Amherst so that the daffodils will bloom in May, when the anniversary theme will be Neighborhoods.
People interested in purchasing bulbs can do so at the Garden Club's plant sale Sept. 20 at the Strong House on Amity Street, the weekly farmers market in downtown Amherst or at the Hadley Garden Center.
Organizers hope neighborhoods, churches, schools and businesses will join in the celebration to beautify Amherst's landscapes.

Late night snacks
A new food cart selling sausages, hot dogs, soda and other assorted items will open outside the downtown bars this fall.
Mauro Aniello, who operates the Monkey Bar and Grill restaurant at 63 North Pleasant St., said the Monkey Business cart may serve food from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily
The cart, Aniello said, will be parked close to his restaurant, and he hopes it might serve to ease some of the crowds after bars let out for the night.
The food will include also include Tofu Pups, steak and cheese sandwiches and prepackaged snack food.
The Select Board recently approved the lunch cart license.
Weiss report
Each week the Select Board agenda sets aside time for a report from Town Manager Larry Shaffer.
Now, Select Board Chairman Gerry Weiss will be providing his own report to his fellow board members, supplementing Shaffer's report, which is something appreciated by board member Stephanie O'Keeffe
O'Keeffe writes on her Web site, stephanieokeeffe.com, that having the weekly report from the chairman will help the public and other board members to stay up to date:
"I think this could be a good way for him to inform the SB (Select Board) and the community at large about bits of information large and small."
In the first week of his report, which focused primarily on the Plum Brook Recreation Area and how well the grass is growing on the soccer fields, Weiss joked that the title of his comments should be pronounced just like the television show Colbert Report, in which the t's are silent.
"I think it should actually be called the Chair Report," Weiss said.
