Garden report: The tulips, pulmanaria and dandelions have bloomed. No surprise, the dandelions outnumber the tulips.

The Amherst Farmer’s Market opens Saturday, April 20 for the season on the Town Common at 7:30 a.m.

The annual Sustainability Festival will also be held on the Common Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, with lots of organizations such as the Sierra Club, the Shade Tree Committee and vendors.

Gigi Barnhill, president of the Amherst Historical Society, sent an email noting biographer and Tufts Univerity Professor Julie Dobrow will speak on “The Transcendentalists’ Call: Mabel Loomis Todd, the Thoreau and Emily Dickinson,” on Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Munson Memorial Library. The program is free and open to the public.

Music on Main will present “Unsilenced — Hearing Afghanistan Today” with composer and pianist Arson Fahim, Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, according to an email from Dick Matteson. A preconcert conversation with the composer is at 1:15 p.m.

Suggested donation is $20.

The Amherst Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help at the Strong House this spring-summer season, according to an email from Mary Dunn of Amherst. Greeters are needed primarily on Saturdays, to assist board members in welcoming and helping visitors learn about the community’s history. An introduction session is scheduled May 2 at 4 p.m . The new museum exhibit is “Cambodians in Amherst, ” which opens May 11.

A red maple was planted in the front lawn at the Munson Memorial Library last Saturday in honor of Sue Hugus, who was the librarian there for over 36 years. Many former and current colleagues attended the event.

The Amherst Shade Tree Committee organized the planting. Many new trees were planted on the common, very visible as you drive by.

A concert to benefit the ABC (A Better Chance) program will be held Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Church. The concert features the Amherst Area Gospel, ARHS Hurricane Singers, Hampshire Young People’s Chorus and the UMass Gospel Choir. Suggested donation:$20.

Eileen Wood of Amherst sent a postcard card of Vermont with St. Johnsbury circled. That’s where she saw the total eclipse. Her description, “WOW!”

Larry Zacharias of Amherst sent me an email with good news about Judy Dixon of Amherst, who earned bronze as a member of the Queen’s Cup team for women over 75 in the Senior Masters’ World Championships in Turkey. The team beat South Africa, Ireland and Australia. If I had known, would have asked her to send me a postcard.
